The notice nearby says:
'A Bullaun stone is a large rock where a basin or bullaun has been carved out. Normally the bullaun stones face upward and thin example is unusual in that the bullaun is on the side of the stone. There are also a number of smaller holes drilled into the rock. It is unclear as to the original purpose of the stones but it may have had an astronomical significance as it has been noted that the bullaun faces in the direction of the mid winter sun rise position. There are a number of other bullaun stones in the Bonane valley, including "The Rolls of Butter" a unique multiple bullaun stone situated adjacent to Drom-Fiachna cemetery.'
